Sybiha, during a meeting on restoring navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, recalled Ukraine’s experience 02.04.2026 18:49 Ukrinform Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz mirror Russia’s tactics in the Black Sea, Ukraine possesses valuable experience in countering maritime blockade and is prepared to collaborate with regional nations bilaterally and with our transatlantic partners.
This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, during an international meeting on restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, chaired by the UK’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Yvette Cooper, Ukrinform reports, citing the MFA’s website.
The head of Ukrainian diplomacy underscored the direct link between the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz and Russian aggression against Ukraine.

“Rogue regimes exchange expertise. What Iran is doing today in the Strait of Hormuz, Russia did yesterday in the Black Sea. The challenge is that Iran has learned from Russia’s missteps and drawn conclusions,” he observed.
The head of the diplomatic department noted that in the matter of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran shares the same objectives as Russia had in the Black Sea: to destabilize global markets and to blackmail others; the only distinction is that four years ago, Russia attempted to weaponize food, whereas today, Iran is attempting to weaponize energy.
According to the minister, Ukraine also has a direct interest in the stability of global markets. Russia must not be allowed to leverage instability in the Middle East to finance many more years of war.
Drawing parallels, Sybiha recalled that Ukraine managed to break the Russian blockade in the Black Sea through the use of naval drones and a clever strategy.
He emphasized that the principles of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea must be upheld in the Strait of Hormuz, just as they are in the Black Sea.
“We must put an end to this blockade. Ukraine is ready to engage with the nations of the region on a bilateral basis and to cooperate with our transatlantic partners. Ukraine is prepared to contribute,” stated the Foreign Minister.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to halt arms supplies to Ukraine to compel European allies to join his coalition for restoring operations in the Strait of Hormuz.
