Ukraine’s contemporary chamber ensemble, Lyatoshynsky Trio, made its inaugural appearance in the celebratory program of the Salzburg Festival’s opening, Fest zur Festspieleröffnung. This information was shared by Ukrinform, citing the ensemble’s manager, Yuliia Ostroverkhova. The Lyatoshynsky Trio comprises Mykhailo Zakharov on violin, Susanna Chambelan on cello, and Artem Yasynsky on piano. They presented two distinct programs, showcasing a broad artistic spectrum that ranged from European modernist compositions to romantic classics and tango nuevo. According to the Lyatoshynsky Trio’s manager, the initial concert was dedicated to the works of Arvo Pärt, György Kurtág, and Borys Lyatoshynsky. This year, György Kurtág, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday, was a central figure in the festival’s programming. For the Ukrainian ensemble, “it was a great honor to present his music alongside Borys Lyatoshynsky’s Second Piano Trio, continuing our mission to introduce Ukrainian chamber music to an international audience.” The second program featured two masterpieces of global chamber music: Johannes Brahms’ First Piano Trio and Astor Piazzolla’s Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas. Ostroverkhova highlighted that the Lyatoshynsky Trio’s debut in the official festival opening program marked a significant occasion, not only for the ensemble itself but also for the international recognition of Ukrainian academic music. “The performance of Borys Lyatoshynsky’s Second Piano Trio on the stage of the Salzburg Festival serves as further evidence that Ukraine’s musical heritage is increasingly finding its place within the European concert canon,” she stated. As is known, the Lyatoshynsky Trio was established in 2019. The collective consistently introduces Ukrainian chamber music to the world, harmonizing it with European classical masterpieces and offering a fresh perspective on shared cultural heritage. The ensemble has performed at the Wiener Konzerthaus, Opéra Comique in Paris, the National Philharmonic of Ukraine, and numerous international festivals across Europe. Their debut album featuring Borys Lyatoshynsky’s chamber music, released in 2020, was broadcast on BBC Radio 3. As Ukrinform reported earlier, a charity concert dedicated to Ukrainian music, solidarity, and support for Ukraine took place at the Protestant church of Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune in Strasbourg, France.
