According to Ukrinform, these are the results of a survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology.
65% of respondents state that they do not support any side.
At the same time, 22% of surveyed Ukrainians expressed support for the USA and Israel, and 7% supported Iran.
Another 7% could not answer the question (or are unaware of the conflict).
Moreover, for instance, more educated respondents were more likely to state that they sided with the USA-Israel, although even among them, 61% did not support either side.
As noted by the Executive Director of KIIS, Anton Hrushetskyi, the surveys indicate that since 2023, sympathies towards Israel have been declining – from overwhelming support after the October 7, 2023 attack to predominantly unsupportive of joint US and Israeli actions against the regime in Iran now.
Considering the criticism of the US leadership by the Ukrainian population, the current results might more largely reflect a critical stance towards President Donald Trump, and to a lesser extent, this concerned Israel.
In any case, the Iranian regime is an enemy to Ukraine due to its cooperation with Russia and responsibility for numerous casualties among the Ukrainian population. However, the current war has clearly dragged on, Iran has found the weaknesses of its adversaries (primarily – the Strait of Hormuz), and there are currently no visible paths to resolving the conflict in the near future. As a consequence, oil prices have risen, and the US is easing sanctions against Russia, which supports the Russian state’s ability to wage war against Ukraine. Therefore, the unpopularity of the US-Israeli war against Iran among the Ukrainian public is entirely understandable, Hrushetskyi emphasized.
At the same time, he noted, this situation shows that allied or constructive partnership relations between Ukraine and Israel are absolutely natural, as their enemies are shared. Russia is not an ally and is not a reliable partner for Israel; in fact, it is an instigator of war and a sower of chaos in the Middle East.
Furthermore, Hrushetskyi added, KIIS surveys demonstrate a consistently favorable attitude of Ukrainians towards Jews living in Ukraine.
The survey was conducted from April 20-27 using telephone interviews (computer-assisted telephone interviews, CATI) based on a random sample of mobile phone numbers in all regions controlled by the Ukrainian authorities. 1005 citizens of Ukraine aged 18 and older were interviewed.
Formally, under normal circumstances, the statistical error of such a sample (with a 0.95 probability and considering a design effect of 1.3) did not exceed 4.1% for indicators close to 50%, 3.5% for indicators close to 25%, 2.5% for indicators close to 10%, and 1.8% for indicators close to 5%. Under wartime conditions, in addition to the specified formal error, a certain systematic deviation is added.
As Ukrinform reported, Trump instructed his aides to prepare for a prolonged blockade of Iran, attempting to force Tehran to make concessions on the nuclear issue.
